CITATION

 

Samuel Shem Laushugno was born on 6^th June, 1985 at Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State to a Radiographer father. His primary school education was at College of Education Staff School, Azare from 1990 to 1996. His junior and senior secondary school education were at All Saints College, Gombe and Walter Gowons Memorial College, Lasulle Shongom, Gombe State from 1996 – 2002.  Shortly after, he gained admission to the University of Maiduguri as a member of the pioneer set of Radiography students from 2003 – 2009.

 

He did his mandatory pre-registration internship in 2009 and also participated in the statutory national youth service corps (NYSC) in 2010 at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Plateau State, Nigeria and the Nigeria Navy School of Health Sciences and Technology, Offa Kwara State, Nigeria, respectively.

 

He was employed by his home state government, Gombe State, after his NYSC in 2011. Desirous of growth intellectually, he proceeded to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nnewi Campus for his Masters Degree in Radiography (Medical Imaging). He holds the record as the first fastest candidate to graduate from the programme (2013 – 2015). Without delay, he applied for and was admitted to the same institution for Ph.D in Medical Imaging in 2015.

 

Samuel Shem Laushugno progressed rapidly in his career as he is currently a Chief Radiographer. He is stationed with the State Specialist Hospital, Gombe and equally is in charge of Radiography practice with the Gombe State Ministry of Health. He is also a  member of the Gombe State Private Hospital Registration and Regulatory Authority representing Radiography profession. He was also at sundry times a member of several high-powered committees in the State ministry of Health Gombe State, among which are:

CCommittee for Monitoring, Supervision, Mentoring and Evaluation of Health Facilities, Ministry of Health, Gombe State.

·  Technical Committee for the upgrading of Hospital Equipment  and Establishment of Standard Diagnostic Centre, Ministry of Health, Gombe State.

·  Infectious and Disease Control Committee, Specialist Hospital Gombe, among others.

 

Shem is currently the Gombe State branch chairman of the Association of Radiographers of Nigeria. Under his leadership the celebration of World Radiography Day on 8^th November has always been spectacular. His contribution to deliberations at Council meetings, as well as on mass media platforms, are often insightful.

 

He is also a member of, and holds leadership positions, in other professional groups as follows:

 

1. Associate Member International Society of Radiographers and Radiologic Technologist (ISRRT).

2.  Member Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM).

3.  Member National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP).

4.  Member/Vice President EFCC/NYSC Integrity Club

 

Mr Shem is an upcoming researcher who has attended and delivered papers at several conferences and workshops.  He has also published papers in several Journals in his area of specialization.  To date he is an author and co-author to more than fifteen (15) academic publications. His research interest is in the area of ultrasound imaging.

 

In the short period he has been Chairman of Association of Radiographers of Nigeria Gombe Branch, Samuel Shem Laushugno has proved all doubting Thomases wrong by his aggressive and articulated pursuit of  his set goals. Radiography profession for a very long time had been lagging behind in terms of the role it was expected to play in the delivery of health care services in the State.  Today, Radiography, and by extension, Radiographers, are widely known and recognized among health professionals, ministries and government parastasals in the State through his wide range of activities and publicity. As part of corporate social responsibility, the the Radiographers in Gombe State under his leadership, carried out free obstetrics ultrasound imaging in collaboration with the State Primary Health Care Development Agency and Gombe Local Government, all as part of activities to mark this year’s world radiography day on 8^th November.

 

Another noteworthy achievement is that Samuel Shem Laushugno has selflessly worked to ensure that the federal scheme of service for radiographers was  adopted by the Gombe State government. Today Radiographers in the State enjoy the same entry grade level as their counterparts with the federal government. He has also ensured that appropriate adjustments were effected for senior Radiographers already employed in order to maintain relative seniority in the service.

 

Furthermore, Samuel Shem Laushugno has maintained a cordial relationship with other health professionals and government agencies in the health sector in the State.

 

As chairman of the ARN in the state, he worked relentlessly to cement relationships between colleagues and also built bridges of friendship in and around the state.  Samuel Shem Laushugno is therefore, very well liked and respected by his colleagues and other health care professionals in the State.

 

He is happily married and blessed with children.

 

The Radiographer-father of this young man should be proud of what his boy has become, so are the members of the ARN WRD Awards Committee.

 

The committee therefore, awards the Gombe State branch of the ARN, and presents Mr Samuel Shem Laushugno as the most exemplary ARN state (chairman) of 2017.
