CITATION OF

RAD. ALHAJI MODU ALI (NCE, B.RAD, M.Sc, PhD scholar)

CHAIRMAN, BORNO BRANCH OF

THE ASSOCIATION OF RADIOGRAPHERS OF NIGERIA

ON THE OCCASION OF THE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN THE NIGERIAN RADIOGRAPHY FAMILY GLOBALLY ON 22ND NOVEMBER, 2019 IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

The Outstanding Leadership Award is an innovation of Education Committee (EDUCOM) of the Association of Radiographers of Nigeria (ARN). It was conceptualized in 2017 by Rad Tom Adejoh (Chairperson, EDUCOM) to create an impetus for the celebration of World Radiography Day (WRD), an event  hitherto marked consistently by Lagos Branch led by Hon A.F.K. Bakre (M.Sc), but neglected by the vast majority of other state Branches. Rad Adejoh reasoned that there was a need for an event that will bind, bond and accentuate the sense of professional consanguinity. He eventually saw that possibility in WRD, and the ‘Outstanding Leadership Award’ is the icing on the cake.

Quite commendably, the experiment succeeded as both the award and the regular bulletins and motivational essays of EDUCOM spurred more Branches to identify publicly with the WRD. In 2016, which was the last year of the previous ARN Council, ≤ 5 out of 37 (13.5 %) possible ARN Branches put up an effort on WRD. From 2017 to 2019 which was the tenure of the current EDUCOM, participation increased steadily in quantity, tempo and frenzy: 16 Branches (43.24 %, 2017); 22 Branches (60 %, 2018); and 24 Branches (65 %, 2019). The investment and degree of activities by some Branches was breathtaking. Competition for the ‘Outstanding Leadership Award’ was stiff and full of fanfare.

Gombe Branch in northeast Nigeria, led by Mr Samuel Shem Laushugno (M.Sc) clinched the pioneer award in 2017. Their attempt to replicate a similar feat in 2018 was thwarted by Borno Branch which came tops. In an unprecedented manner, the same Borno Branch, which is one of the youngest ARN Branches, still defeated older, more stable Branches in 2019 to clinch the award again. This is no coincidence but the result of brilliance and diligence in leadership. It is on account of this feat that the citation of the Chariman of Borno Branch of ARN, Alhaji Modu Ali (NCE, B.RAD, M.Sc, PhD scholar) is presented. Hardwork commands attention, and Rad A.M. Ali deserves that attention.

Alhaji Modu Ali, a Kanuri, was born in Yerwa-Maiduguri, Marte Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State of Nigeria on 21st September, 1983. He had primary to tertiary education in Maiduguri from 1988 to 2010, when he was eventually awarded Bachelor of Radiography (B.Rad) degree by University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID). He went further to obtain a postgraduate diploma in Education (PGDE) from Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri in 2015.

To break the circle of being a homeboy, he went as far as Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus, South-East Nigeria, for an M.Sc in Medical Imaging. He is one of the very few Radiographers to conclude their M.Sc in ≤ 2 years. He became a Ph.D student the following year.

His working career still kept him bound to Maiduguri just like his pre-postgraduate education. Statutory internship (2010 – 2011) and NYSC (2011 – 2012) were at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH) Maiduguri, respectively. After his NYSC he was employed at same hospital since 2012 till date. He is skilled on computed tomography and minor fault-finding in radiological equipment. He is also computer literate. He had been unit head in his department since 2011. Recently (November 2019), he was employed by UNIMAID, his alma mater, as an associate lecturer.

This tall, calm and brilliant Kanuri man whose talent is easy to be underestimated was an external clinical examiner for RRBN to UNIMAID in 2014 and a resource person/lecturer to the PGD ultrasound course organized by the RRBN in Maiduguri (2019). He is not new to leadership. He was class monitor in primary school for several years. In his undergraduate days at UNIMAID, he was Financial Secretary of University of Maiduguri Radiography Students Association (UMARADS) from 2006 to 2010. He registered with the ARN immediately after graduation from university in 2010, and has not looked back ever since. He had been chairman of the ARN, FNPHM chapter from 2011 till date. He was elevated to the level of Vice Chairman, Borno Branch in 2017, and there was no hesitation in electing him chairman overwhelmingly, in April 2018.

His leadership acumen has drawn many awards to him: Best performing staff of Radiology Department by the Management of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Maiduguri in 2012; best supporting clinical radiographer award by UMARADS in 2015; Award of appreciation by UMARADS in 2017; outstanding leadership award by ARN in 2018, amongst others.

This young man is married with three children. He is a fervent muslim, a hardworking gentleman, a self-motivated professional, team player, good communicator, a reliable researcher with over 15 research output, and a man who loves Nigeria, his fatherland. His hobbies are reading, teaching, researching, swimming and hunting. Rad. A.M. Ali was able to motivate his co-leaders unto great quests, resulting in two-time award. The cohesion in the leadership and their sense of cooperation is commendable.

8. There was also a live radio talk in Kanuri language to create awareness about Radiography.

9. This was capped up with a friendly football match between Radiographers and Medical Laboratory Scientists in Maiduguri.

The depth of vision and extent of sacrifice convincingly gave Borno Branch the lead in a fierce contest by six elegant ARN Branches who were pre-qualified ab initio by the awards committee to contest. The Branches were: Sokoto, FCT Abuja, Ogun, Lagos, Rivers and Borno.  The five Branches combined scored one hundred and fifty-five (155) points while Borno Branch alone scored an incredible 142.5 points!

Distinguished Radiographers, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Borno Branch as the ARN Branch of the year 2019. This award winning Branch is gallantly and admirably led by Rad A.M. Ali, and he is our Most Outstanding Leader in Nigerian Radiography family globally for 2019 – 2020.

Congratulations.

Rad Tom Adejoh (Ph.D)
