Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Paediatric radiography requires specialised skills and knowledge to ensure high-quality imaging while minimising radiation exposure. In Osun State, Nigeria, healthcare facilities use adult-centric practices for paediatric patients, compromising efficacy because of anatomical, behavioural, and needs-based differences.
Aim: This study assessed competency gaps in paediatric radiography practices among healthcare practitioners in Osun State, Nigeria, evaluating expertise, training needs, and service effectiveness.
Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed, involving a census sampling of 27 radiographers. Data collection utilised a self-developed questionnaire, analysed using SPSS version 25.
Results: A significant limitation in paediatric radiography services was the lack of training among radiographers, with 29.6% having received formal paediatric training and 22.2% undertaking paediatric-focused continuing education in the past two years, indicating a mismatch between clinical demand and radiographer preparedness. Specialised paediatric resources are also needed.
Conclusion: Targeted training and resource allocation are essential to ensure effective paediatric radiography services and meet the healthcare needs of this vulnerable population.
Implication for Practice: Policymakers and healthcare administrators should prioritise radiographer training and resource provision to optimise paediatric radiography services.
